Gabriel Monroe is an unconventional but brilliant neurosurgeon in Mammoth Screen’s first returning series, written and created by Peter Bowker. The series explores Monroe’s world both inside and outside St Matthew’s Hospital in Leeds, as medical emergencies cut across the lives of everyone involved – staff, patients and relatives.

Monroe’s equal and opposite is Jenny Bremner, a talented but socially reserved heart surgeon. While Monroe does all he can to encourage his weak-stomached trainee Wilson and keep the ambitious Springer in check, Bremner’s charges Mullery and Witney are left to observe her cardiac operations from the sidelines. A witty, engrossing, edge-of-your-seat medical drama, Monroe returned for a second series – which was even more frenetic, entertaining and emotional – in 2012.
