Mammoth Screen options Trapeze’s Grime Kids by DJ Target, with award-winning playwright Theresa Ikoko set to adapt

Company News July 24, 2018

Leading production company Mammoth Screen has optioned the television rights to Grime Kids by DJ Target from Marium Raja at No Chiefs and Richard King at Orion.

Executive Producers for Mammoth are Tom Leggett (71’, Room) Preethi Mavahalli (NW, The City & the City) and Damien Timmer (Poldark, Endeavour)

Tom Leggett said: “Not only is Grime Kids the definitive story of the birth of a British musical phenomenon, it is also an incredibly funny and moving story of friendship and community. For both fans of Grime and non-fans alike, we hope audiences will be inspired and entertained by Target’s wonderful coming of age drama. We are thrilled to be working with the immensely talented Theresa Ikoko, whose intimate understanding of this story will bring this group of friends and their adventures to vivid life on screen! ”

The author DJ Target said “The response to Grime Kids so far has been overwhelming, with both seasoned grime fans and newcomers to the culture learning something or enjoying the trips down memory lane. I wrote Grime Kids with a visual in mind, so the fact that I’ll be working with Mammoth Screen to bring that to life is incredible. I’m thrilled to be working with the amazing young writer Theresa Ikoko, who shares the same passion and excitement for this project as I do, and fully understands the culture and place it grew from. Watch this space, it’s coming!”

Theresa Ikoko said “I’m excited to be a part of this project. I’m looking forward to working with Target and Mammoth to bring a people, place and culture to life that are such an important part of recent British history and contemporary Britain. It’s so much more than music. I look forward to sharing the heart of the friendships, community and the movement of grime, with those who know and love it and those who soon will”

Richard King, rights manager at Orion said: ‘We couldn’t be more thrilled that Mammoth are acquiring the television rights to Grime Kids. Target’s heartfelt and insightful memoir irrestibly hauls readers back to a time when the underground music movement was first breaking through into the mainstream, and follows the exploits of Target and his fellow grime pioneers as they make their music ambitions a genre-changing reality. Packed with incident and eye-opening insight, it’s also a story with real heart, and I know that with the team at Mammoth and Theresa at the helm this is going to make a sensational dramatization. Grime Kids is an explosive insider account of grime, from subculture to international phenomenon. A group of kids in the 2000s had a dream to make their voice heard – and this book documents their seminal impact on today’s pop culture.

DJ Target grew up in Bow under the shadow of Canary Wharf, with money looming close on the skyline. The ‘Godfather of Grime’ Wiley and Dizzee Rascal first met each other in his bedroom. They were all just grime kids on the block back then, and didn’t realise they were to become pioneers of an international music revolution. A movement that permeated deep into British culture and beyond. Household names were borne out of those housing estates, and the music industry now jumps to the beat of their gritty reality rather than the tune of glossy aspiration. Target’s book reveals its explosive and expansive journey in full, using his own unique insight and drawing on the input of grime’s greatest names.

Grime Kids: The Inside Story of the Global Grime Takeover by DJ Target was published by Trapeze, an imprint of The Orion Publishing Group, on 14 June 2018.
